Make a donation through your IRA. Usually, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxed because the account holder doesn't pay taxes on the money when making contributions to the IRA. However, account holders aged 70 1/2 or older who transfer funds directly from their traditional IRA to ABC (a qualified charity) can donate up to $100,000 without it being considered a taxable distribution. Donate appreciated securities directly to ABC. This allows you to avoid capital gains tax that would normally apply if you sold the asset, and you might also be able to claim a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the securities (if you itemize deductions). As a result, the charity benefits from the maximum value of your gift, while you reduce your tax liability and possibly rebalance your portfolio at the same time.
